The two ways families connect to your school
There are exactly two ways a parent or guardian gets connected to a class on Inscriti. Everything else is a variation of one of these:
- You invite them (school-initiated). Staff add a parent's email to a student. Inscriti emails them an invitation; the moment they sign in with that email, they're automatically linked to their child — no codes, no approval step. This is the most accurate path because you control exactly who is linked to which student.
- They use a class code (family-initiated). Staff share a short code (or QR) for a class. A parent enters it and connects themselves — either enrolling their child or following the class. Great for self-serve sign-ups, grandparents, aides, and anyone you'd rather not enter by hand.
Both doors lead to the same place. Use email invites for your core roster, and class codes for everyone else.
What is a class code?
A class code is a short 6-character code (for example, K7M2QX) that belongs to one class. Each class has its own code, shown with a matching QR code. A parent who enters the code — or scans the QR, or opens the share link — is connected to that class right away. Codes never include confusing characters like 0, O, 1, or I.
All the ways to connect a parent to a class
Here is the complete list of ways an admin or teacher can get a parent into a class:
- Email invite from a student's profile — you type the parent's email; they're auto-linked when they sign in. (Most precise — see below.)
- Invite the parent while you're creating the student — same email invite, done in one step.
- Share the class code or QR — post it, text it, or show the QR in class; parents self-join.
- Email the class code to a specific person straight from the class.
Bulk-importing students from a CSV creates the students, but it does not invite parents. After importing, add parent emails from each student's profile (or share the class code) to connect families.
Invite a parent by email (from a student)
This is the most accurate way to link a parent to a specific child.
- Open the Students tab and tap the student.
- Open the Family section and tap Invite Parent/Guardian.
- Type the parent's Email Address (required).
- Choose the Relationship: Mother, Father, Guardian, or Other.
- (Optional) Turn on Primary Contact, Can Pick Up, and Receives Notifications.
- Tap Send Invitation.
The parent gets an email to set up their account. As soon as they sign in with that email, they're linked to this child automatically — there's nothing for you to approve.
Invite a parent while adding a student
When you create a new student you can invite their parent at the same time, so you don't have to come back later.
- Tap the Students tab, then the + button.
- Fill in the student's details.
- In the parent/guardian section, add the parent's email, relationship, and pickup/contact options.
- Tap Save.
The invitation is sent the same way as above.
Create a class code (admins, teachers)
- Open the Classes tab and open the class.
- Tap People.
- Find the Class join code card.
- Tap Create class code.
The code and its QR appear right away. Only staff can see this card.
Share a class code
Once a code exists, you can hand it to families in a few ways:
- On the Class join code card, tap Share to open your device's share sheet (text, email, messaging apps, etc.).
- Or read the 6-character code out loud / put it in a class post.
- Or show the QR code on screen and have parents scan it with their phone camera.
Scanning the QR or opening the shared link takes the parent straight to the join screen in the app.
Email a class code to someone
- On the Class join code card, tap Email.
- Type the recipient's email address.
- Tap Send.
Inscriti sends them a branded email with the code, so they can connect even if they're not in your system yet.
Get a new code or turn a code off
On the Class join code card:
- Tap New code to replace the current code with a fresh one. The old code stops working immediately — useful if a code was shared too widely.
- Tap Disable to switch the code off without deleting it. Tap Enable to turn it back on.
Turning a code off does not remove anyone who already joined — it only stops new people from using that code.
Join a class with a code (parents)
If a teacher or school gave you a class code:
- Tap the Classes tab.
- Tap Have a class code?
- Type the code (for example, ABC123) and tap Look up code.
- If the class is for one of your children, choose the child under "Which of your children is this class for?" and tap Join class.
- If you don't have a child in this class (or aren't linked to one yet), just tap Follow class.
You can also tap a share link or scan a QR code from your school — it opens this same screen. If you don't have an account yet, you can create one and you'll be brought right back to finish joining.
Enrolling a child vs. following a class
What happens when you enter a code depends on whether you pick a child:
- Pick a child → they're enrolled. The child is added to the class roster right away and you get the full class experience for them. You'll see "You're in!"
- No child selected → you follow the class. The class appears on your Classes tab with a Following badge, and you'll see its posts and notifications. You'll see "You're following!"
Children who are already enrolled show a ✓ Enrolled tag and can't be added twice.
What a follower can and can't do
Following keeps you in the loop without being on the roster.
A follower can:
- See the class on their Classes tab (with a Following badge)
- Open the class and read its posts
- Like and comment on posts
- Get notifications about new class posts
A follower can't:
- See the class roster, student profiles, or attendance (the People tab is staff-only)
- Take part in messaging through the class
If you should have full access to your child's class, ask the school to link your child to your account. Following is meant for everyone else.
See and remove followers (staff)
Staff can see exactly who is following a class via a code, and remove anyone at any time.
- Open the class and tap People.
- Scroll to the Followers section (only staff can see it).
- Tap Remove next to anyone you want to take off.
Removing a follower instantly stops them from seeing the class and its posts. They can re-join later if you share a valid code again.
Stop following a class (parents)
- Open the class.
- Tap the Following pill at the top.
- Confirm that you want to unfollow.
You'll stop seeing the class and its posts. You can re-join anytime with the class code.
